Live Fast, Day Two – Ayurveda, Cleaning Produce, Chew your Juice!

I started the day with a healthy constitution, I then weighed myself.   Yesterday, Day One of the Wild Fast, I weighed 129lbs .. this morning I weigh 125lbs.   A four pound quick weight loss is usual for this body .. so don’t think this is ‘normal’ or that your result will be the same.

In addition to being a Yogini,  I am an Ayurveda Lifestyle Consultant .. I am also a Vata bodytype .. so this combination (among other things) means I know this body very well.   Over the last 20+ years I have noted what I refer to as a “floating three to five pounds”, which means this body easily gains and/or loses five pounds routinely.   This is acceptable for this body.   For example, I can enjoy a meal out with friends and gain 3-5lbs, but by the next morning, its gone.   Sometimes the ‘floating five’ lasts longer .. mostly over the winter (which it is now).   So that during the cold months of the year, I carry an extra five pounds; which means I weigh (generally) 130lbs in the autumn and winter, and 125lbs in the spring and summer.

I also know, based on living in this body, that 125 is my bottom line for health.   Anything less, even minus one pound, and I start to feel off-center.   I can literally feel the immunity system declining.   But then, I rarely drop below 125 because it is my NORMAL body weight.

According to Ayurveda, one’s “normal” body weight is generally established between the ages of 18 and 28 (approximately).   So that, one should be able to wear the same clothes they wore in high school, regardless of their age.   Which is why, at 51 years of age, I am the same weight I was when I was 18.

Otherwise, this morning’s first smile .. ‘put the lime in the coconut drink ’em both up’!   Nothing like starting Day Two of a Wild, Fast and Live Vegan drink!    Be sure to read yesterdays post (Wild Fast, Day One) to find out about the amazing benefits of drinking Lime and Coconut Water first thing in the morning.   Forget caffeine!   Not only will the combo of Lime and Coconut Water convert you from a zombie to an alert being, but will gently start your digestive system, promote fat burn and weight loss, and get the belly read for a healthy breakfast of fruits and greens!

When Juicing its not just important, but VERY important to wash fruits and vegetables.   Especially those that are conventionally grown.

Conventional produce is covered in residue from pesticides, mold, bug parts, possibly fecal matter, and other nastiness.   The most popular fruits and veggies are also the most pesticide and chemically laden, because they must be grown quickly, preserved and sent to market to meet consumer demands.

Before eating any fruit or veggie – and especially before Juicing them – they must be washed.     I am sure many of you have seen the ‘fruit and veggie wash’ at the grocery).   Well, save your dollars!   Soak conventional veggies in water and baking soda for 15 minutes to remove loose reside (you can also add vinegar).   Then, scrub them with a veggie brush under running water.   Then you can safely eat and/or juice them without peeling!

A recipe:

I fill a large bowl with water, add 1 Tablespoon Baking Soda, and 1/2 cup of vinegar.   Again, soak for 15 minutes, scrub and rinse.

Now .. how can you tell which veggies and fruits are organic or conventionally grown?   “Easy”, you say, “they are marked at the grocery store.”

“Ah .. not always so”, says the wise Yogini!   I have found many a conventional fruit in the organic bin, and vice versa, enough times to check the PLU #.

The PLU means “Price Look Up”, and its a code that not only helps with inventory but identifies for the consumer what they are buying (it may also identify country of origin, harvest date, and the like).    Ok .. you really should write this down and keep it in your purse or wallet:

Organic produce starts with 9, and is a five digit number.

Conventional produce starts with 3 and 4, and is a four digit number.

Genetically modified (GMO) produce starts with an 8, and is a 5 digit number.

“Nine to Thrive.   Four is okay.   Never put Eight on your plate!”


“Nine is fine.  Eight I hate.  Four is a bore.”

Now a word about GMO’s.  Where Organic Farmers must adhere to strict rules, this is not the case with GMOs.  Big Farma does not have labeling restrictions!   So if something contains corn, cotton seed, soy or canola – in America – you can be 99% certain its been genetically modified.   Be Aware and Beware!

Fasting is a natural and healthy way to generate abundant health and energy; however, it can come with some symptoms.    For those not used to Fasting, you may experience  headaches, dizziness, fatigue, diarrhea, nausea, increased body odor, and negative emotional responses.

Take heart .. IF this is from fasting .. its only temporary.   Consider that your body is DETOXING .. rapidly.   Fasting increases the detoxification process, so physical and/or emotional issues that may have been in the background are now rushed forward .. quickly.

Be sure to CHEW your JUICE .. this gives you the most nutrients and a full feeling.   Be sure to rest often .. so refrain from heavy physical activity.   Be sure to listen to soothing/meditational music, and/or read spiritual literature.

DO NOT drink colas or alcohol, or eat chemically laden processed foods while fasting.

More than just drinking Juice, we need to actually assist the body in the cleansing process.   By following the suggestions above, we can experience many positive experiences while Fasting.   Such as, a heightened sense of awareness and connectivity,  an abundance of energy that prompts you to laugh and smile, the ability to clearly focus and delve deep into troubling issues.   You may also notice a greater empathy for those around you, and your senses may sharpen .. so that you are able to better articulate your thoughts, your sense of smell is enhanced, your vision improved, your sense of touch intensified, and overall, take on a glowing appearance.

Fasting is temporary, so the effects we have are also temporary .. while the benefits are long term!

    Yogini Vallerie…..thanks for this amazing post….I’ll let you know about the lime and the coconut….I admit to enjoying my coffee (smile) in the am…..only one….

      Thank you for commenting on my blog! I understand about coffee and tea addictions because many of my Yoga students tell me about it. However, those who have tried the lime and coconut do agree that it is both a body and brain boost. It never hurts to try!
